There are breakup albums, and then there is Bloody Kisses. Peter Steele wrote this record from somewhere so deep in the dark that it accidentally invented an entire mood, and gothic doom metal has been living in that mood ever since.

Released in 1993, Bloody Kisses is the album that took Type O Negative from cult Brooklyn weirdos to the undisputed kings of slow, heavy, romantic dread. The dirge tempos, the Sabbath-thick riffs, the cathedral bass tones, the deadpan humour hiding inside the melodrama, all of it is here across two slabs of vinyl in a proper gatefold. "Black No. 1" remains one of the defining moments in alternative and gothic music. "Christian Woman" and "Blood and Fire" don't trail far behind. If you own one doom metal record, it should probably be this one.
