TRIVIUM Ember To Inferno CD (2003)

Before Trivium were filling arenas and getting into arguments about whether they were metal enough, they were four teenagers from Orlando recording a debut that sounded like they'd absorbed every Metallica and Killswitch Engage record and then set it on fire. Ember To Inferno came out in 2003 and announced Matt Heafy at seventeen years old, which remains either inspiring or deeply inconvenient depending on your relationship with your own teenage output.

The original Lifeforce Records pressing is long gone, so getting a physical copy of this one takes some hunting. It's rough around the edges in the best way, thrash-adjacent and angrier than what came after, and it gives you the full context for why the metalcore and heavy metal world paid attention when Ascendancy dropped two years later. This is the origin document. The dark aesthetic was already there from the start.
