Norwegian gothic metal has always carried a particular kind of weight, the kind that comes from long winters and a scene that took darkness seriously long before it was fashionable. Trail of Tears understood this better than most.

Existentia, released in 2009, finds the band deep in their symphonic gothic metal period, big orchestral arrangements colliding with extreme metal edges and the dual vocal interplay that defined the best of that Norwegian school. Think mid-era Theatre of Tragedy or Tristania but with a harder, more aggressive undercurrent running through it. Not background music. This demands your full attention.
