San Diego's Strife occupy a specific and important corner of American hardcore history, part of the same mid-decade wave as Earth Crisis and Snapcase, bands who took the aggression of the genre and matched it with politics and conviction rather than just posturing. In This Defiance is their second full-length and widely considered their peak, a record that influenced a generation of kids who would go on to start their own bands, print their own zines, and argue about what hardcore actually means.
