STRIBORG Trepidation CD (2008)

Tasmania has no business producing one of the most genuinely unsettling black metal projects on the planet, and yet here we are. Striborg is the solo work of Sin Nanna, recorded in isolation deep in the Tasmanian wilderness, and it sounds exactly like that, a one-man descent into misanthropic fog.

Trepidation, originally released in 2005, sits comfortably in the more experimental wing of Sin Nanna's catalogue. The production is raw to the point of erasure, guitars dissolving into static, drums buried under layers of ambient murk. It's not trying to be Darkthrone. It's doing something stranger and more genuinely Australian, a black metal that sounds like the bush at 3am, hostile and indifferent. For collectors of outsider dark aesthetic and Australian extreme metal, this is an essential piece of local history pressed to disc.
