By 2019 there were people who had grown up, had kids, and handed those kids a copy of Iowa. We Are Not Your Kind is Slipknot making a record for all of them, and for themselves, and not particularly for anyone else.

The sixth album arrived a decade after All Hope Is Gone and felt like a band that had burned through grief, lineup changes, and a genuinely difficult stretch and come out swinging. Corey Taylor has called it the best thing they have ever done and it is hard to argue when you get to the back half of this tracklist. The percussion is unhinged in the best way, the samples are weirder than they needed to be, and Unsainted opens with a full choir because of course it does. This is heavy metal that still cares about arrangements and still wants to unsettle you, which is the correct priority order.
