SINS OF THY BELOVED, (The) Perpetual Desolation 2LP (2000)

The late 90s Norwegian gothic doom scene produced a handful of records that still hold up as genuine benchmarks of the form. Perpetual Desolation is one of them.

The Sins of Thy Beloved arrived fully formed at a moment when gothic metal in Scandinavia was reaching peak density, running alongside Tristania and Trail of Tears in a scene that understood atmosphere as a structural element, not just decoration. Perpetual Desolation from 2000 is their high watermark, slow and heavy where it needs to be, orchestral in the right places, with violin and clean female vocals woven through the doom without softening the weight. It's the kind of record that gets name-dropped in the same breath as Draconian and Sunterra, and deserves every word of it. On double LP, it breathes properly for the first time.
