Before Niklas Kvarforth leaned into jazz saxophone and genuinely unsettling provocateur behaviour, there was this: Shining's 2001 debut, raw Swedish black metal soaked in genuine nihilism, re-pressed in 2004 for the people who missed it the first time.

Livets ändhållplats translates roughly to Life's Terminal Stop, and the record earns that title. This is not black metal as costume. Shining were already mapping the psychological edge of the genre before they started dismantling it entirely. If you came to them through the later avant-garde records and haven't gone back to the source, this is where the darkness was still entirely unironic. Essential for anyone building a serious dark metal collection.
