Shannon Shaw has always been comfortable making music that sounds like it was recorded in 1962 and emotionally processed in a nightmare. Year of the Spider, released in 2022, is Shannon and the Clams at their most unravelled, a doo-wop and garage rock record written in grief after the death of her mother.

It's an odd, heavy, beautiful thing. The Clams have always had one foot in the Cramps school of psych-warped Americana and another somewhere darker, and this record leans hard into that second place. The 1234 Go! Records colour pressing is the one to own. For anyone whose record collection crosses garage punk with something more emotionally complicated, this belongs there.
