1996. Sepultura go to the Xavante territory in Mato Grosso, record with an indigenous Brazilian community, and put out one of the most important metal records of the decade. Roots didn't just change Sepultura, it helped crack the door open for groove metal, nu-metal, and every band that came after trying to fuse tribal rhythm with down-tuned fury.

Max Cavalera was at the absolute peak of his powers here, and the album's cultural significance goes well beyond the riffs.
