SEPULTURA Roots CD (1996)

1996. Max Cavalera takes Sepultura to the Xavante tribe in the Mato Grosso, records in the jungle, and comes back with something that genuinely confused the thrash purists and converted everyone else. Roots didn't just shift the direction of metal, it kind of predicted the next five years of the genre whether anyone wanted to admit it or not.

This is the album that gave us Ratamahatta, Attitude, and Cut Throat, and proved that groove metal could have actual cultural weight behind it. The Xavante percussion, the Sepultura brutality, the Korn collaboration on Lookaway, it's a record that was doing genre fusion before fusion was a buzzword. Max and Igor were at the absolute peak of their chemistry here, and the rawness of the production keeps it from ever feeling like a crossover sellout. It aged better than most gave it credit for at the time.
