By 2008, Satyricon had long since stopped caring what the black metal purists thought, which is part of what makes The Age of Nero such a confident record. Frost's drumming alone could silence most arguments.

This is Satyr and Frost at their most streamlined, stripping the songs back to pure momentum. The riffs are direct, the production is massive, and there's a clarity to the darkness that some corners of the black metal world called selling out and other corners called evolution. The title track in particular hits like something between a war march and an industrial groove, and it sounds great on a decent stereo at volume. This Norwegian limited edition digipak pressing is the one to own, proper packaging for a record that still turns heads in the metal section.
