SARKE Oldarhian (2011) CD

When the drummer from Khold and the guitarist from Darkthrone team up, you're not getting a side project in the dismissive sense. Sarke is a proper band with a proper agenda, and Oldarhian is where they locked in.

Norwegian blackened thrash with a grimy mid-paced stomp that sits somewhere between the raw atmospherics of the black metal scene and the groove-forward momentum of classic thrash, it's the kind of record that rewards volume. Thomas Berglie brings the same percussive authority he's brought to Khold, and Nocturno Culto's presence in the writing gives the whole thing a lineage you can feel without it ever feeling like a Darkthrone record. Oldarhian has its own personality, which is rarer than it should be in this corner of the dark aesthetic universe.
