Israel's Salem have been at this since 1985, longer than most of their peers have been alive, and by 2007 they had refined their sound into something that sits in the uncomfortable space between death metal brutality and black metal atmosphere without fully belonging to either. It's heavy in the way that feels geological, slow-moving and inevitable, with a darkness that doesn't perform itself. This isn't a band chasing trends in the European scene. They built their own scene in a country where extreme metal had almost no infrastructure, and that isolation shows in the music, in the best possible way.
