Billie Joe Armstrong has been in a band called Pinhead Gunpowder since before Green Day could fill a pub, and for a lot of people that's the more interesting part of the discography.

Unt is the band's first full album in over two decades, and it lands like they never stopped caring about this particular corner of punk rock, melodic, direct, and without a hint of stadium pressure anywhere near it. Pinhead Gunpowder were always the project where the pop-punk chops got stripped back to something rawer, closer to Lookout Records-era Bay Area punk than anything that would follow Armstrong's main band into the mainstream. If you've got the splits and EPs worn down to the grooves, this is exactly what you wanted. If you're coming in fresh, this is a solid entry point into why this band matters beyond the footnote treatment they sometimes get.
