PHAZM Antebellum Death 'n Roll (2006) CD
France has been quietly doing whatever it wants with extreme metal for decades, and nobody outside the scene ever seems to see it coming. Phazm are a perfect example: a Paris band who decided death metal needed more groove, more swagger, and a lot less reverence for its own rules.
Antebellum Death 'n Roll from 2006 is exactly what the title promises. This is death metal that has been out drinking with rock and roll and come home at 3am with no apologies. Think early Gorefest on a Southern Comfort bender, or Entombed's Wolverine Blues if it had been recorded in a Pigalle basement. The riffs are thick, the tempo knows when to roll instead of blast, and there's a looseness to the whole thing that makes it genuinely fun without ever going soft. Death metal that moves its hips a little. Not for purists, absolutely for everyone else.
