Djent is a word that gets thrown around so loosely it barely means anything anymore, but Periphery are one of the few acts who actually helped define what it sounds like when polyrhythmic guitar work and progressive metal ambition collide at volume. Hail Stan is their fourth record and their most committed to being exactly themselves, which is to say: uncompromising, technically absurd, and occasionally very pretty in a way that makes the heavy parts hit harder.

Released in 2018, Hail Stan stretches across nearly an hour of material with the confidence of a band who stopped caring about radio edits around album two. Reptile, the eleven-minute closer, is the kind of track that gets referenced in arguments about what progressive metalcore can actually achieve.
