OZZY OSBOURNE Patient No. 9 CD (2022)

At this point Ozzy Osbourne has outlived genres, bandmates, sobriety stints, and at least three predictions of his retirement. Patient No. 9 arrived in 2022 as a reminder that the Prince of Darkness still has things to say and people to call.

The guest list alone tells you this is a serious record rather than a legacy cash-in. Jeff Beck, Tony Iommi, Eric Clapton, Zakk Wylde, and more cycle through, but the album never feels like a tribute night, it feels like Ozzy at the centre of his own universe pulling in collaborators the way he always has. The title track featuring Beck is quietly devastating. The heavy metal bones are intact throughout, the gothic darkness is genuine, and producer Andrew Watt keeps everything sounding enormous without losing the grit. For a man who spent years in genuine physical difficulty, it hits harder than it had any right to.
