Nu metal had a lot of bands doing the heavy-meets-spoken-word thing. Most of them were doing it for effect. Otep Shamaya was doing it because she had something to say, and the industry was deeply uncomfortable about that.

Otep never got the mainstream credit they deserved, which honestly just makes the patch feel more right. This is a band for people who found them at the exact right moment and held on. An ALT CVLT pick for the alternative fashion collector who knows the difference between a genre name and an actual band.
