Opeth haven't made a death metal record in over a decade, so when they came back to growls on The Last Will And Testament, it landed like a will being read in a house nobody expected to inherit.

Released in 2024, this is Mikael Åkerfeldt threading a narrative concept through the kind of progressive rock and metal that Opeth have owned since Blackwater Park, but with teeth back in it. The album follows a dying man's final testament and the family secrets it unravels, which is exactly the kind of gothic literary concept you'd expect from a band who have always taken their darkness seriously. It's a record that rewards headphones, patience, and probably a decent amount of sitting alone in the dark. The Swedish prog death underground is very pleased with it, and they're a hard crowd.
