While most bands were still figuring out their sound, Mikael Åkerfeldt arrived in 1998 with My Arms, Your Hearse already knowing exactly how brutal and heartbreaking a concept album about a ghost could be. Progressive death metal had a new benchmark, and the underground noticed.

This is the record that sits between the raw hunger of Morningrise and the orchestral ambition of Still Life, leaner and more focused than either, with riffs that could level a building and acoustic passages that'd make you put your fist down and just listen.
