OPETH Ghost Reveries Vinyl 2LP (2005)
There are albums that made people realise death metal could be beautiful, and Ghost Reveries is one of them.
Released in 2005, it was the last Opeth record to feature founding drummer Martin Lopez and arguably the last full plunge into the death-prog hybrid the Swedish band had been perfecting since Morningrise. It opens with Ghost of Perdition and doesn't really let up, cycling between Mikael Åkerfeldt's guttural roars and passages so achingly melodic they feel like a completely different band, except they don't, because Opeth made that contrast the whole architecture. The 2LP reissue gives it the physical weight it deserves, the kind you put on deliberately, not as background noise.
