OFFSPRING, (The) Smash Back Patch

1994 was a good year to be angry in a Californian sort of way, and Smash was the independent album that sold ten million copies and made major labels look extremely silly. The Offspring at peak velocity, before anyone had opinions about them, just a record that sounded like the inside of a skate park at closing time.

The punk and alternative crossover crowd knows this one well. Smash sits in that sweet spot where pop-punk hadn't yet become a marketing category and the songs were still fast enough to cause minor property damage. "Come Out and Play", "Self Esteem", "Genocide", the whole run holds up. A back patch from this era of the band is a legitimate piece of alternative fashion history, not nostalgia bait. There's a difference.
