In 1989, Trent Reznor recorded Pretty Hate Machine mostly alone in a Cleveland studio after hours, and accidentally defined what industrial music could do to a pop song. The genre has never fully recovered, in the best way.

This is the album that introduced a generation to synthesisers as weapons, to vulnerability as aggression, and to the idea that electronic music could be just as furious and dark as anything coming out of the metal underground. "Head Like a Hole", "Terrible Lie", "Something I Can Feel", this record holds up in a way that embarrasses most of what came after it. The industrial and dark aesthetic crowd claimed NIN immediately, and the gothic, metal, and alternative fashion scenes have kept them close ever since. Wearing this is a position statement.
