Oakland death metal has always had a particular kind of ugliness to it, a wet, churning rot that feels less like a genre exercise and more like the earth opening up. Necrot have been one of its finest practitioners since Blood Offerings landed like a coffin lid in 2017, and Lifeless Birth continues their streak of writing riffs that feel genuinely ancient.

Released in 2024, this is the record for anyone who thinks modern death metal got too clean, too technical, too interested in impressing other musicians. Necrot are still obsessed with the song, the groove, the kind of mid-paced demolition that owes as much to Autopsy and Bolt Thrower as it does to anything with triggered kicks. This pressing, neon violet merge with gold and black splatter, is the kind of thing you buy because you want the altar to look right, not just because it sounds better than streaming (though it does).
