The Dirt is the autobiography that reads like fiction, and the soundtrack is the proof of concept. Mötley Crüe were genuinely trying to kill themselves and accidentally invented an era in the process.

This 2LP soundtrack to the Netflix film compiles the sleaze rock essentials alongside new recordings and covers, including their absolutely unhinged take on Anarchy in the UK, which says more about the Crüe's relationship with punk than any think-piece ever could. Tommy Lee, Nikki Sixx, Vince Neil, and Mick Mars were operating in a genre, glam metal, that gets written off as embarrassing by people who never actually listened to it. Shout at the Devil is still heavier than half of what gets called metal today. The double vinyl format does justice to a band whose entire existence was maximalist.
