MISFITS Earth AD (RSD) (1983) Vinyl LP

There are exactly two eras of the Misfits and Earth A.D. is where the first one ends, not with a whimper but with Glenn Danzig essentially handing the wheel to hardcore and walking away. Recorded in 1983, it's the most aggressive thing they ever put out, and they put out a song called "Death Comes Ripping."

Where the earlier records leaned into B-movie horror pop and doo-wop shadows, Earth A.D. is just pure velocity. Doyle's guitar is a blunt instrument. The songs are short and mean. It influenced every crossover and hardcore act that came after it, whether they'll admit it or not, and it belongs in any serious collection of American punk. This Record Store Day pressing on purple marble vinyl is a limited edition, the kind of thing that actually warrants the hype because the original is a document of a band burning everything down on the way out the door.
