MICHAEL KELLAND HUTCHENCE & DANNY SABER: One Way & Save My Life 10" (Picture Disc)
Michael Hutchence did not get a quiet ending, and he did not leave quietly. What he left behind was still being assembled when he died, and this is part of that unfinished architecture.
Recorded with Danny Saber, the American musician and producer who had worked with Black Grape and David Bowie, these two tracks belong to the solo project Hutchence was building in the years after INXS had become something he needed to step away from. The music sits somewhere between trip-hop atmosphere and rock instinct, more interior than anything he had done before, less performed. "One Way" and "Save My Life" are not INXS songs. They are not trying to be. They are the sound of someone working out who else he could be. Released as a limited edition 10-inch picture disc, single sided, it is a collector's piece in the truest sense, not because of scarcity alone, but because of what it represents. Australian music history pressed into wax.
