METALLICA Ride The Lightning Vinyl (1984)

Before the black album, before the Load era discourse, before any of it, there was a band operating on pure hungry instinct. Ride the Lightning, Metallica's 1984 sophomore record, is the sound of that instinct. A group of kids from the Bay Area figuring out, track by track, that they could do whatever they wanted and it would work.

Fight Fire with Fire opens at a sprint and never apologizes. Fade to Black introduced a generation to the idea that a metal band could be quiet and devastating. Creeping Death became a live ritual. The whole record sits in this razor-sharp space between raw thrash energy and genuine songwriting ambition, and it still sounds like nothing else. This 2016 reissue on vinyl is the right format for music that was always meant to hit you in the chest, not come through a laptop speaker at 60 percent volume.
