Every few years a band releases something that makes other heavy music feel like it was made by people who haven't quite figured out what they're doing yet. Meshuggah are that band, and The Violent Sleep of Reason is that record.

Recorded live in the studio with minimal overdubs, this 2016 beast captures the Swedish polyrhythm overlords at their most visceral. Where some of their catalogue leans into clinical perfection, this one has grit under its fingernails. The riffs don't groove so much as they recalibrate your entire understanding of time signatures. Jens Kidman sounds like he's been awake for four days and has decided that's fine. Tomas Haake remains the most terrifying drummer in metal, full stop. If you've been sleeping on djent's actual originators while following their descendants, this is your correction.
