MAYHEM Deathcrush EP(CD) 1987
Before the murders, before the church burnings, before black metal became a genre with a Wikipedia page, there was Deathcrush. Oslo, 1987. Eight minutes of intent.
Mayhem's debut EP didn't invent black metal so much as drag it screaming out of the earth. Recorded with Maniac on vocals before Dead joined the fold, Deathcrush is raw, ugly, and unapologetic in a way that most extreme metal has spent thirty-five years trying to recapture. The Venom cover tells you everything about where they were coming from. The rest tells you where they were going. If you're building a serious dark aesthetic record collection or you just need to understand why Norway matters, this is the document.
