Released in 1987 on Posercorpse Music with a run of 1000 copies, MAYHEM's debut EP is one of the founding documents of black metal, a record so raw and violent in intent that it made even the death metal scene flinch. Produced by Euronymous with Conrad Schnitzler's bizarre ambient intro still intact, it's got the DNA of everything that came after baked into its filthy grooves. Dead wasn't even in the band yet. This is the Maniac era, pre-legend, pure chaos. Picking up a coloured vinyl reissue of this is as close as most of us will get to owning a piece of the original press, and honestly that's probably safer for everyone.
