MARDUK Nightwing LP Picture Disk (1997/2010)
Marduk spent the nineties establishing themselves as Sweden's most relentlessly aggressive black metal export, which is a genuinely competitive category. Nightwing, from 1997, was a slight pivot, a concept record built around Vlad the Impaler that traded some of the pure blasting fury for something with a bit more narrative weight, and it worked.
This 2010 picture disk reissue of Nightwing is one for the serious end of the collection. The format suits the record's theatrical ambitions, the artwork pressed into the vinyl itself, the whole thing sitting somewhere between object and artifact. Marduk were doing war metal before the term fully existed, and Nightwing shows the band at their most compositionally ambitious without going soft. Essential gothic and black metal shelf company.
