Beauty behold; Chrysiridia riphaeria is a Moth, not a butterfly! Known as the sunset moth.


Its stunning rainbow metallic colours on both sides of this beautiful day flying moth. The colours on the Madagascan sunset moth's wings are produced by the conjunction of two optical phenomena namely optical interference and inter scale reflection. It is endemic to the Island of Madagascar where large migrations are seen in certain months. The bright metallic colours are a warning to predators of their toxicity.

Large glass dome is 26.5 cm in height, with a solid wooden base of 17cm in diameter.
