Norwegian black metal in 1997 was not a genre in recovery mode. It was still crawling out of the ashes of burned churches and courtroom proceedings, and Mactatus arrived right in the thick of it with Blot, a record that understood the assignment completely.

Formed in Trondheim, Mactatus never got the same headlines as their countrymen but Blot holds its own against the era's best, raw and atmospheric in equal measure, the kind of black metal that sounds like it was recorded somewhere cold and far from anyone who might ask you to turn it down.
