LACRIMAS PROFUNDERE The Grandiose Nowhere CD (2010)

German gothic metal has a particular talent for making beautiful music about the specific misery of existing. Lacrimas Profundere have been doing it since the nineties, and by 2010 they had the gothic doom formula down to something almost architectural, massive and dark and depressing in the best way.

The Grandiose Nowhere is the band at a crossroads between their doom-drenched earlier work and the more rock-forward direction they'd been moving toward, and it lands somewhere genuinely interesting. Rob Vitacca's vocals carry weight without theatrics, the guitars are thick and deliberate, and the whole record has the kind of melancholic atmosphere that earns comparisons to Type O Negative without being a tribute act. If you got here via The 69 Eyes or Charon or To/Die/For, this fits right in the same rotation.
