KYUSS Blues For The Red Sun CD (1992)

Before Queens of the Stone Age, before anyone called it stoner rock, there was a bunch of guys from Palm Desert playing too loud in a generator-powered parking lot. Blues for the Red Sun is where it all started to make terrible, wonderful sense.

Released in 1992 on Dali/Chameleon and largely ignored until the world caught up, this record is the reason half the heavy music of the last three decades sounds the way it does. Josh Homme was still a teenager. Nick Oliveri had not yet destroyed any tour buses. Brant Bjork's drumming sounds like the desert itself caving in slowly. The fuzz is so thick it has a texture. Tracks like Thumb and Green Machine didn't invent heavy, but they absolutely redefined what heavy could feel like in 100-degree heat with no air conditioning and nowhere to be.
