1998. Nu-metal wasn't quite a genre yet, it was still five or six bands doing something that critics couldn't figure out how to write about. Follow the Leader is the record that made the argument moot. Freak on a Leash won a Grammy. Ice Cube guested. The genre was official.

Jonathan Davis's vocal delivery on this album still doesn't quite fit anywhere else. Field of Anguish adjacent to Got the Life adjacent to a track that features Fred Durst. The chaos is the point.
