Before emo was a mall category, before Hot Topic knew the word existed, Jawbreaker were doing something rawer and more honest than almost anyone around them. Unfun is where it started: 1990, a Bay Area band playing like they had something to prove and the vocabulary to prove it with.

Blake Schwarzenbach's lyrics hit different from the jump, literary and bruised in a way that influenced basically every punk kid who ever kept a journal and pretended they didn't. This isn't the polished pop-punk crossover of Dear You, this is the lo-fi, anxious, scrappy version, the one that sounds like it was recorded in a room that smelled like cigarettes and ambition.
