Oakland's Isotope are working firmly in that tradition on this self-titled record, raw punk with a crust edge and the kind of production that sounds like it was recorded somewhere that probably doesn't pass a safety inspection. This is d-beat and raw punk that respects its lineage without being museum-piece about it, pulling from the Scandinavian hardcore tradition (think Wolfbrigade, Totalitär) while carrying the Bay Area's own history of doing this kind of music with conviction and volume. The orange and black half-and-half with splatter pressing is genuinely one of the better-looking pieces of wax to come through recently, the kind of thing you hold up to a light and feel briefly smug about owning.
