IRON MAIDEN The Number of the Beast 40th Ann CD (1982)
Forty years on and The Number of the Beast still sounds like a dare.
Released in 1982, this was the record that announced Iron Maiden were operating in a completely different dimension to everyone around them. It was the first album with Bruce Dickinson behind the mic, and the jump in scale is immediate, from the horror-cinema sweep of the title track to the locked-in gallop of Run to the Hills to the quietly devastating closer Hallowed Be Thy Name, which remains one of the finest songs in the entire heavy metal canon, full stop. The NWOBHM was finding its ceiling and Maiden were already through it. This 40th Anniversary edition is the way to own it properly, whether you're picking it up for the first time or replacing a copy that's been played into the ground.
