It was the first album with Bruce Dickinson behind the mic, and the jump in scale is immediate, from the horror-cinema sweep of the title track to the locked-in gallop of Run to the Hills to the quietly devastating closer Hallowed Be Thy Name, which remains one of the finest songs in the entire heavy metal canon, full stop. The NWOBHM was finding its ceiling and Maiden were already through it.
