IRKALLIAN ORACLE Apollyon (2016) CD

Some black metal is about atmosphere. Irkallian Oracle are about obliteration. There's a difference, and Apollyon makes it very clear, very quickly.

Out of Sweden and operating at the furthest reaches of black/death metal, Irkallian Oracle sit in that same lightless corridor as Portal, Grave Miasma, and Mitochondrion, music that doesn't so much play as it descends. Apollyon is dense, ritualistic, and genuinely unsettling in the way that the best dark metal can be when it stops caring about being accessible. This is underground metal for people who find most underground metal too polished. The dark aesthetic here is not a costume, it's the entire architecture.
