Norway in 1999 was busy exporting chaos, and In The Woods were doing something stranger than most of their countrymen, weaving gothic atmosphere through progressive structures while the rest of the scene was still arguing about corpse paint.

Strange In Stereo is the third album from these Bergen experimentalists and arguably their most fully realised, the moment where the black metal grime gives way to something more cinematic and unsettling. It sits in that rare space occupied by early Theatre of Tragedy and Ulver's quieter impulses, dark and expansive without ever feeling safe. If you came to this through gothic metal and found yourself wanting something with more edge, or came through black metal and wanted more atmosphere, Strange In Stereo meets you in the middle and takes you somewhere neither genre quite planned.
