IMPALED NAZARENE Manifest (2007)

Finland has always done black metal with a particular kind of ugliness that feels less theatrical and more like a genuine threat, and Impaled Nazarene are patient zero for a lot of that energy. Manifest, from 2007, is the band in full accelerant mode, punk-inflected, fast, and aggressively hostile to atmosphere in the way only they can pull off.

This is not atmospheric black metal. There are no forests, no moons, no melancholy. Manifest is all velocity and bile, the logical end point of a band who once named an album Ugra-Karma and meant it. If your entry point into extreme metal came through Darkthrone's punk phase or Mayhem at their most unhinged, this record belongs in your collection. The kind of CD you find at the bottom of a box at a record fair and feel genuinely lucky about.
