HIM spent the late 90s and 2000s convincing an entire generation that gothic rock could be radio-friendly without losing its teeth, and the Heartagram became one of the most recognised symbols in alternative fashion, full stop. Love Metal was a genuine genre invention, not a marketing angle, and this Finnish band's influence runs straight through everything from melodic doom to the kind of dark aesthetic bedroom posters that never really go away.
