HEILUNG Drif CD (2022)

There are bands that use the word ancient as an aesthetic and there is Heilung, who seem to have actually crawled out of it. Drif, released in 2022, is the sound of ritual as composition, recorded like it was always meant to be heard around a fire somewhere north of where maps stop being useful.

The album leans deeper into the ceremonial than its predecessors, pulling from Norse, Anglo-Saxon and early Germanic traditions without ever tipping into the kind of cosplay that lesser acts can't avoid. It is dense, patient and genuinely unsettling in the best possible way. The dark folk and industrial textures sit under the skin rather than on top of it. This is music for people who find most music too comfortable.
