1995. Green Day had just survived becoming the most hated band in punk by selling ten million copies of Dookie, and their response was to make something uglier, faster, and considerably more pissed off.

Insomniac is the album that proved they weren't a fluke. Where Dookie was bright and hooky, this one is caffeinated and slightly unhinged, all wire-tight riffs and Billie Joe howling like he's got something to prove. Tracks like Geek Stink Breath and Brat hit harder than anything on the record before it. It didn't move as many units, which somehow makes it more interesting. The 2021 25th anniversary pressing is the version to own if you're going to own one.
