Whether you were fourteen and furious in 2004 or you've just done your homework, American Idiot is one of those records that actually did what everyone claims their favourite album did, which is change the conversation. Green Day took the snarl of punk rock, wrapped it around a concept album about disillusionment and suburban dread, and somehow got it onto MTV without filing down the teeth.

It brought a wave of kids into alternative and punk music who then went and found the Ramones, the Clash, Rancid, and everything else waiting for them in the back catalogue. That pipeline matters. Billie Joe Armstrong wrote a character named the Jesus of Suburbia and made him feel like someone you knew, and the album's still doing that work twenty years later. A solid addition to any alternative collection.
