Thirty years in and Grave Digger were still swinging. Clash of the Gods landed in 2012 and the Germans didn't blink, double-bass thunder, Chris Boltendahl's gravel-and-gravel voice, riffs that could soundtrack an actual siege engine.

Grave Digger occupy a specific and important corner of the power metal universe, one where the speed metal roots never got sanded back for stadium palatability. They came up in the same Teutonic wave as Running Wild and Accept, and unlike a lot of their peers they kept the edge. Clash of the Gods is the mythological chapter of their catalogue, Greek and Norse imagery hammered into eleven tracks of pure heavy metal conviction. No winking irony, no crossover ambitions. Just the thing itself.
