GIVE UP THE GHOST (now known as AMERICAN NIGHTMARE) Background Music 2001 CD

Before they were American Nightmare, they were Give Up the Ghost, and Background Music is the record that made Boston hardcore kids lose their minds in 2001. It arrived at that exact moment when post-hardcore was either going to get precious or get ugly, and Wes Eisold chose ugly, and it was the right call.

There's a lineage here that runs from Negative Approach through Dag Nasty and lands somewhere between desperate and furious. Background Music is short, relentless, and lyrically hit harder than most of its contemporaries wanted to admit. The name change to American Nightmare happened partly because of legal pressure, partly because the band was already something different by then, but this record belongs to the Give Up the Ghost era and sounds like it.
